Daily Trip to Gjirokastër: Explore Albania’s Historic UNESCO City

At 7:00 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel in Tirana or Saranda for a daily trip to Gjirokastër, one of the most beautiful cities in Albania. You’ll board our comfortable minibus and set off for the City of Stone, renowned for its rich Ottoman heritage, striking architecture, and stunning natural surroundings. Wondering if it’s as beautiful as they say? Join us, and let’s explore together!

Scenic Drive and Arrival in Gjirokastër

After approximately three and a half hours of travel, we will reach Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage city. The journey offers you the chance to see the changing landscape of Albania, from the flat plains of the coast to the majestic mountains of the south.

Our first stop will be the Gjirokastër Castle, the oldest and most prominent landmark of the city. The castle dates back to the 12th century and played a vital role in the city’s defense throughout the centuries. As we explore its impressive walls and towers, you’ll get a glimpse of what life was like for those who lived within the fortress during Ottoman rule.

Discover Gjirokastër Castle and WWII Museum

Within the castle’s grounds, we will visit the Weapons Museum, home to a remarkable collection of WWII infantry weapons, including rifles, cannons, and other military artifacts. The museum offers a deep dive into the military history of Albania during the 20th century. As you stand on the castle walls, enjoy sweeping views of the town below and the lush landscape of the Drinos Valley. This panoramic view alone is worth the trip!

Exploring the Ottoman Heritage of Gjirokastër

Following our time at the castle, we will wander through the city’s historical center, with its distinctive Ottoman-style houses. Known for its stone rooftops and narrow, cobbled streets, Gjirokastër retains much of its original charm. Many of the homes you will see belonged to notable Albanian families, including the famous Kadare family, whose famous author Ismail Kadare is one of Albania’s literary giants.

You may not know, but Gjirokastër is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the world, which is why the Albanian government has declared it a Museum City. As we walk, we’ll delve into the city’s history and how it became an important center for trade and culture during the Ottoman Empire. You’ll also get the chance to see the Bazaar, with its traditional shops selling handmade crafts, including carpets, ceramics, and leather goods—perfect for souvenir hunting!

Ethnographic Museum: A Window Into Albanian Culture

Next, we’ll head to the Ethnographic Museum, located in the former house of the Zekate family, one of Gjirokastër’s wealthiest families during Ottoman times. The museum is an excellent opportunity to learn about the daily life of the people of Gjirokastër, from clothing and cuisine to traditional festivals and rituals. As you explore the museum’s rooms, you’ll get a unique insight into the customs and culture that have shaped Albania for centuries.

Free Time and Local Cuisine

After the museum, you’ll have one hour of free time to enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants in Gjirokastër. Gjirokastër is famous for its delicious food, and this is your chance to taste some traditional Albanian dishes. Try tavë kosi, a dish made of lamb, rice, and yogurt, or byrek, a savory pastry filled with cheese or meat. Don’t forget to pair your meal with some local wine from the Gjirokastër region, known for its unique taste. For more on Albanian cuisine, check out our Albanian Food Guide.
